More With Gynecomastia Causes

What is gynecomastia and its symptoms? This specific condition is characterized by abnormal development of large mammary glands in males which then results in breast enlargement. This condition can actually occur physiologically in neonates as well as in the elderly. Among boys, this condition is often a source of distress but for the large majority of boys, the breast development disappears within a few years. Indeed, gynecomastia causes remain uncertain all these years. Experts say that it has generally been attributed to an imbalance of sex hormones or the tissue responsiveness to them. As for individual cases, the root cause is rarely determined. In fact, the conditioned may also be caused by an imbalance of estrogenic and androgenic effects on the breast which then results in an increased or unopposed estrogen action on breast issue. According to statistics, approximately 4 to 10% cases of gynecomastia are due to drugs. In fact, Aldactone is a common cause which induces gynecomastia in 10% of those receiving it as a treatment for heart failure.

Although gynecomastia causes are still undetermined, you would readily distinguish if someone has gynecomastia. Puffy nipples is in fact one of the most common forms of gynecomastia. The glandular tissue accumulation is concentrated under and typically confined to the areola. In fact, pure glandular gynecomastia is common among bodybuilders and is thought to be a result of the use of anabolic steroids. Body builders and other athletes are sometimes afflicted with gynecomastia in its purest form due to excess testosterone level from steroids which is then converted to estrogen. People who have this kind of condition should not worry because proper treatment of pure gynecomastia can be done only by excision of the breast tissue. Apart from that, there is also what we call congenital or hereditary gynecomastia which is typically evident by the ages of 12 to 18 in boys. In fact, 30% to 60% of young boys suffer from large male breasts. Treating the underlying gynecomastia causes may lead to improvement in the condition. Patients should speak with their doctor about revising any medications such as risperidone which was found to cause gynecomastia. Take note that there are various insurance companies that deny coverage for such surgery for gynecomastia treatment on the grounds that it is a cosmetic procedure. Often times, experts prefer to use radiation therapy to prevent gynecomastia in patients with prostrate cancer prior to estrogen therapy.

Although gynecomastia is not physically harmful, there are some cases wherein they can be an indicator of other more serious underlying conditions such as testicular cancer. Although you are not fully aware of gynecomastia causes, you must take note of its symptoms. You may not know it but growing glandular tissue is often tender or painful. More often than not, it can present social and psychological difficulties for the sufferer. Even weight loss can change the condition in cases where it is triggered by obesity but remember that losing weight will not reduce the glandular component. These patients can’t target areas for weight loss.
